Yep, 42 minutes of video. This was a big project. Plus: I've got an all-new five-part original series called Money over on Nebula, which you can watch as a bundle with CuriosityStream! curiositystream.com/tomscott

I'm so glad somebody addressed this, evenbetter that it's you Tom. I get so frustrated listening to some creators complain about things when they're completely in the wrong because their viewers will jump to their defence all the same.

To say that relying on a hit as retirement is bad planning is unfair to musicians. That's their job, if they make enough money to live off who are you to ask that it be taken from them?

Relying on one single hit (or just a few hits) genuinely is bad financial planning, if a person is relying on their entire music career, that's different. It's just risky, even with the current system.

Not that anyone cares, but I feel that infringement should be determined in terms of the use of the copyrighted work infringing upon the rights holder's market. Entire Star Wars movie being barely reacted to on Twitch? Take em down. A lyric to a song being used to open a chapter of a book? Get bent, that doesn't hurt the sales of the original song in any way.

I’ve always thought 30 year is an ideal time length but I can definitely see the appeal of nostalgia cycles. 50 years sounds like a perfect length of copyright and I can only hope we get there someday even if work ends up getting grandfathered in and I never get to see it pay off.

Overall, great video with good ideas. But I definitely felt your bias bleed through with certain lines like "gamer babies" or saying they all feel "entitled". A bit agrressive there. You mentioned that Contented ID had two avenues that allow for potential abuse, I would of liked if you addressed solutions to those abuses, at least in the short term, beyond just rewriting the whe copyright system. In my opinion the content Id system should not allow the companies that issue the srikes also be the one to decide if they're correct when appealed

This is just outrageous misrepresentation of the facts and situation of copyright law. Prety much every sentence I hear on this is provably false. I'm sorry, but I can't watch any more, I'm up to 10:00, and I'm done. 9:30: Not true. Not even close. Copyright assigns rectitude according the to scope of the copied work, and the damage done to the potential market. The scope of a person reacting to seconds of a copyrighted work is miniscule. The damage done to the potential market is literally nothing. It's not a 'blurry line', it's a four hundred and fifty metre by 8,000 kilometre line made of human blood. If you call that decision a 'nuanced' one, you're a damned liar. This video is terrible, and anyone who was involved in it's production is personally responsible to a degree for the creeping corruption slipping our democracies into corporation.
The Sparkle Zone
The Sparkle Zone 12 timer siden
TL;DR: It's really hard to enforce the law as it's written so we've forced every ounce of the difficulty onto the users of NOvids and are siding with the corporations because they can sue us. Because Fascism makes life easier, so it must be right.

I've watched now 3 minutes of this and I'm laughing at how ridiculous this is. You think we don't know that copyright is broken? Of course it's broken. But the reality is youtube's system is SILL WORSE than the already broken copyright system as a whole and the fact that there's NO REVIEW and these things can be done AUTOMATICALLY AND THERE'S ALSO NO LEGITIMATE RECOURSE makes the idea that the problem is with copyright law and not with youtuve's system absurd. Google is making too much money off of our content, literally billions too much, to say they can't afford a legal team to review this stuff. Even if that legal team cost them a billion a year, they would still be profiting, and all the work would be done by content creators and that legal team, plus the IT team. Notably, none of it's being done by the people who are actually getting our money.

Sorry, the entire premise of the video is faulty. NOvids's copyright system IS faulty when it flags YOUR ORIGINAL MUSIC on YOUR CHANNEL in YOUR VIDEO. That is not working as intended... ie; broken. The only way to prevent demonetization on YOUR original content is to flag your own video containing your own content so it redirects the money back to you... that is an inherently broken system, unless you can argue (successfully) that is how NOvids intends it to work... which is doubtful.

All content used on NOvids should simply be classed as free advertising for the creator and the video using it should simply credit the original creator of said content used. Or go so far as anyone who's copyright material is used by someone has to pay the company using it advertising fees. Yep that works for me 👍😂

Interesting idea. I would say maybe 50 years expiration, with 20 year renewal option if by the original producer of the music or other content. then again, people need to use inventions, or maybe could argue that they would have invented it themselves, so a patent limit is not unreasonable. But no one needs to use a work of art, music, etc.

copyright system is outdated and shouldn't exist in digital world. patent and trademark only. also patent needs to be very very unique to be legally granted. Copyright system and idea are broken altogether in the modern world. Copyright is highly tied to natural human expression and social media unite people all over the world. They are bound to have simillarities or even exact copies of stuff. Copyright mess is creating unneccesary stress nowadays. Imagine this scenario 10 people happen to do very very simillar dancing moves in the whole world. how would that work? what about codes...coding is a branch of mathemathics and people tend solve things the same way...then how? you see...its a mess

Keep in mind that copyright is fundamentally a form of monopoly right and a restriction of your freedom to use your possessions as you want. As such, copyright should be reduced to the absolute minimum level needed to achieve its purpose.

You'd probably have to do something smarter, in terms of public domain. Like, 20 years, and you can freely cover it, transform it, react to it, whatever. If you want to distribute it for free, 50 years. Anything meant for archival purposes can be done given for free. If you want to charge someone to get it, 70 years, or the death of the artist, whichever is longer. Some staggered like that, would probably make sense.

Blah blah blah, do you support sending people with guns to shut someone down? Yes or no? You did a lot of good work, but really, it's not that hard of a concept to grasp.
